Rules for Touch

The following is an example of one church's rules for touch. Each church and faith community will need to create their own list that fits their community. This list is used by permission from The Child Safeguarding Policy Guide for Churches and Ministries by Basyle Tchividjian and Shira M. Berkovits. Here is another example of Appropriate Touch Guidelines.

Examples of Unacceptable Touch

  • Sexually or physically abusive touch
  • Touching a child’s thighs, stomach or back
  • Corporal punishment
  • Any touch that is unwanted by the child
  • Any touch that is secret
  • Touch that sexually gratifies the adult in any way
  • Lap sitting
  • Playing with hair
  • Full frontal hugs
  • Tapping a child’s clothes bottom

Examples of Acceptable Touch

  • Sitting side by side
  • High fives, side bumps, special handshakes
  • Side hugs
  • Pats on the shoulder
  • Carrying a small child on your hip
